The Impact of Artificial Intelligence on Material Science

Event date and time: 14/11/2024 2:00 pm

Event location: Seminar Room NIMP

GENERAL SEMINARDr. Marius Stan, Scientist and Author, Chicago, USA

The recent progress in artificial intelligence (AI) has turned computers into „assistants” capable of guiding research in a meaningful way. With the continuous increase in the volume, variety and rate of data generation, human analysis becomes extremely difficult, if not impossible. In this presentation, the concept of „intelligent software” is discussed. The software includes elements of artificial intelligence such as machine learning, computer vision and natural language processing. The value of the approach is illustrated using examples in material design with applications in electronics (HfO2), battery electrodes, and 3D printing. In addition, a discussion about the current and future applications of AI demonstrates that the human-computer partnership is changing science and technology for the better. For example, the AI contribution was recently recognized with the Nobel Award in Physics. However, will AI lead to discoveries in science? Will AI become co-author of scientific papers? Will it change our profession?

Dr. Marius Stan is a scientist and author in Chicago, U.S.A. He obtained his BS degree in physics from the University of Bucharest (1986) and his PhD in chemistry from the Institute of Physical Chemistry of the Romanian Academy. After moving to the U.S.A. in 1991, Marius was a Senior Scientist at the Los Alamos National Laboratory and National Director of Computer Science at the U.S. Department of Energy during the Obama administration. He later became the leader of the intelligent materials program at Argonne National Laboratory and Associate Professor at the University of Chicago and Northwestern University. Marius uses artificial intelligence (AI) and high-performance computer simulations to understand and predict the properties of complex systems with applications in energy (nuclear materials and batteries), electronics (computer memory) and fabrication. He has published extensively in scientific literature and holds several patents. In 2021 he decided to devote himself to personal projects centered on the use of artificial intelligence in science, technology, and art. Marius gives a series of talks on this topic at international events and is currently writing a book on human and artificial intelligence.
